The role

We have a fantastic opportunity for a skilled and detail-oriented Bookkeeper to join our growing team and play a central role in maintaining TreeStory’s financial health.

Working closely with our COO and wider operations team, you will oversee TreeStory’s day-to-day financial management — from processing invoices and expenses to reconciling bank accounts, managing payroll, and supporting strategic budgeting and financial reporting. Your work will underpin reliable financial administration, accurate reporting, and strong financial controls that support TreeStory’s mission and growth.

The successful applicant will hold a Finance degree (preferably followed by accounting CPE courses) and be familiar with cloud accounting software packages, ideally Xero. They will also have a passion for being part of a small team committed to sustainable forest management, and share our core mission to protect, expand, connect and diversify Scotland’s forest and woodland resource.

Key responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day financial operations, including invoices, expenses, payroll coordination, and supplier payments
  • Maintain accurate records and reconciliations in Xero, ensuring compliance and timely reporting
  • Support the preparation of month-end accounts, quarterly VAT returns, and annual financial statements in collaboration with our accountants
  • Prepare and issue client invoices, track payments, and follow up on overdue accounts
  • Monitor and update cashflow regularly, supporting financial forecasting and decision-making
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis for projects and company-wide planning
  • Support the creation and maintenance of financial databases related to harvesting operations, including SBI and weight ticket recording, and prepare related internal and external reports
  • Maintain and improve financial systems, policies, and procedures, ensuring legal and tax compliance
  • Provide finance training and support to staff on expense procedures and submissions
  • Uphold TreeStory’s values in all financial communications with staff, clients, and suppliers
What we’re looking for
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with the accuracy and numeracy skills needed for reliable financial record-keeping
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills, able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines using a logical and methodical approach
  • Confident computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and ideally Xero or other cloud accounting software
  • Clear and respectful communicator, able to explain financial information in accessible terms and build positive relationships with colleagues, clients, and suppliers
  • Honest, discreet, and trustworthy, maintaining confidentiality and integrity in all financial matters
  • Proactive and solutions-focused, with a willingness to improve and refine financial processes in a growing and evolving business
  • A supportive team player who contributes positively to a dynamic work environment
  • Personally aligned with TreeStory’s purpose and values, with enthusiasm for contributing to Scotland’s sustainable woodland future
What we offer:
  • Competitive salary
  • Enhanced holiday provision
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Company pension scheme
  • Flexible working patterns including hours and hybrid options
  • Sustainable travel policy including extra days for sustainable travel methods.
  • Excellent personal and career development opportunities
