Rooted: A conversation with Elanor Teel, Community and Consultation Lead at TreeStory

Elanor has been part of TreeStory for just over two years. With a background in behavioural science and environmental communication, she brings a deep understanding of how people connect with nature and each other. Her master’s research focused on how we talk about climate change and how positive, practical framing can help people feel motivated rather than overwhelmed.

That understanding of how people respond to change continues to guide her work today. “I don’t come from a forestry background, which I think gives me a different way of seeing things,” she says. “It helps me focus on how we communicate our projects so that they feel clear and welcoming.”

At TreeStory, Elanor’s work sits at the meeting point between people and place. As Community and Consultation Lead, she helps communities understand what’s happening on their land and feel confident in shaping its future. “It begins with understanding, then grows through involvement, and eventually builds into real excitement for what is possible.”

Working this way takes time and care, and it mirrors how we work together as a team. With team members based across Scotland, we makes space for connection through regular in-person gathers, days spent outdoors together walking through the woods or even taking a cold dip in the water. “When I talk to friends about my job, they’re  always surprised that we make time for that,” Elanor says. “It’s part of how we stay connected and remember why we do the work.”

That same care extends to the people and places we partner with. One of Elanor’s favourite projects is Darkwoods, where she liaises with the Cambusbarron Community Development Trust. “I pass by those woodlands almost every day, so helping share what’s happening there feels personal.” Another, at Glenfalloch, stands out for the exciting aims of the project, and the work of engaging the local community so they feel invested and involved in the project.

“We are helping people rebuild a relationship with the land – that is what makes it meaningful.”

Much of Elanor’s work involves finding ways to make forestry feel easier to understand. She helps translate plans into stories that people can relate to and creates opportunities for communities to share their knowledge and ideas. Whether it is preparing materials for local consultations or talking with landowners about how to reconnect with their land, every part of her role is about helping people feel part of something bigger. “We are helping people rebuild a relationship with the land,” she says. “That is what makes it meaningful.”
